RADIO FREE SAN FRANCISCO synopsis Hans Granqvist, 192 Sunol Street, San Jose, CA 95126 hans@granqvist.com For the first time in many years, cruise ships will land at San Francisco docks. Two young hackers, CHRIS BLACKWOOD (20's) and EVARISTO 'SAMBA' TORESANI (20's) want to make sure they win a lottery of free tickets to the inaugural cruise. In an abandoned subterranean phone sub station turned into a makeshift hacking den, Chris and Samba fail to hack into the computer system. On the way home, Chris passes by his girlfriend's (CAMMIE, 20's) upscale antiques store. Work prevents her form joining Chris and Samba for the celebration at the harbor. Chris's mother died when he was young. Chris's father was declared missing in action by the Army some ten years ago, and now Chris lives alone with his World War II veteran grandpa, J.D. (80's). J.D, Samba and Chris go to the harbor to join the celebrations where two huge cruise ships land. These ships are much bigger than any previous cruise ship and the docks are packed. At the same time the ships land and open their doors, explosions go off all around the city. Heavily armed troops pour out of the ships. They quickly surround and take thousands of civilians hostage. They cut electricity and effectively jam all radio communications are down. In the chaos, J.D, Samba and Chris manage to avoid the attackers and they escape through old phone tunnels back to J.D.'s house. In a secret defense command location, MacNeir Gunnery Base, the president and his generals convene. At the last moment, the president stops a direct counter-attack. It is later revealed that the First Lady is among the hostages. The enemy fire missiles at private news choppers and low-flying intelligence gathering F- 16 jets. A small elite force is brutally fought back. It seems the attackers are always a step ahead. Things look bleak. The attackers now occupy the north-eastern parts of San Francisco, including the deep water harbor. Chris and Samba dare back into the occupied streets and sneak back to their phone sub station. They manage to listen in on the attackers' communication, and they understand that the U.S. defense systems have been hacked for a long time. The U.S. defense command has no way of seeing what really is happening: a massive invasion with thousands of forces approaching U.S. soil. With the attackers hot on their heels, Samba and Chris narrowly escape with information. One of the enemy troops following Samba and Chris is revealed to be Chris's long lost dad, JOHN (40's). Once back at J.D.'s house, Chris and Samba go through the information they captured. Although not all of it is decrypted, Chris realizes he must get to the U.S. defense the information they have. He tries to sneak out of the occupied territory by way of the phone tunnels, but John intercepts him and forces the information off him. Before father and son get a chance to discuss the situation, John helps Chris run away to escape other attacker forces. Back in safety, Chris and Samba (who saved a backup of the intelligence Chris tried to get out) help J.D. rebuild a WW II radio. With this radio, they can send the message out of the occupied territories. Just as they think they have it working, however, the radio blows up and they don't have the antique piece of electronics needed. Chris and Samba again sneak out into the streets, to Cammie's antique store. After scavenging the place, they find the piece they need. Once they return to J.D.'s house, they get the radio working, and J.D. manages to send a message out, using old WW II call signs and techniques. Close to MacNeir Gunnery Base, a retired general, BRAD (80's) recognizes J.D. call sign and message. (Brad and J.D. fought together at D-Day in 1944.) Brad manages to convince the president and current generals that they have a man, J.D., on the inside. At the same time, Chris, Samba, and J.D. finally manage to decrypt the rest of the information they captured: they now have the full attack plans. Surprisingly, John shows up at J.D.'s house. John is regretful and announces he has been wrong, and that he now wants to leave the attackers. He also mentions they picked up Cammie and hold her hostage at the head quarters. John and Chris go to head quarters to liberate Cammie. Chris pretends he is John's prisoner and lets him lead him to where Cammie is held. After a brief fight they escape with Cammie. In a heroic effort to shield his son, John is shot during the escape, and Chris cannot help him. Meanwhile, the president and Brad send a message back to J.D. with the counter-attack plan. J.D. receives it but it is an encrypted message. It takes Samba and Chris hard work to decrypt the message. A Special Forces troop, led by Brad's grandson, assembles just outside the occupied territory. Guided by Samba and Chris, they break into the occupied area through the phone tunnels. They descend on the attackers' H.Q., where a small Special Forces contingent helps Chris sneak in to hack the attackers' computer system from within. When Chris successfully accomplishes this, he and Samba join the Special Forces main attack to free the First Lady and to capture the leader of the attacker. With their systems hacked into, the attackers cannot coordinate their defenses and a massive U.S. counter attack wins the battle. In the end, J.D. and Brad reunite after sixty years, and Samba and Chris get 'pardoned' by the president and offered good security jobs.
